systems and software CAM SoftwAre AddS turning optionS The 2014 version of Delcam FeatureCAM featurebased CAM sof t ware includes new options for turning, four-axis rotary machining and turnmill operations, as well as more strategies for two-axis finishing and easier programming of probing sequences. The software now provides the capability to add fillets to sharp corners without having to edit the geometry in turning operations. The user specifies the radius to be applied, and sharp corners will be filleted automatically. Turning simulation is also more realistic with the ability to program and simulate the steady-rest movements to position large parts during turning. Collision detection against the steady-rest and tailstock is automatic during cutting and transfer operations. Programming turn-mill and four-axis equipment has been simplified with the ability to change the index partway through programming simply by creating a new user coordinate system to use as the new index axis, the company says. Added options for two-axis finishing include the ability to use larger stepovers with automatic machining of upstands, continuous spiral machining either from outside to inside or vice-versa, support for stock models created from roughing tool paths, and automatic avoidance of clamps. FeatureCAM 2013 featured the ability to incorporate probing routines into machining programs. This programming is said to be easier and faster in the 2014 version with built-in options. Users can compile a "favorites" menu of commonly used folders and files that can be dragged and dropped into a project. "the edge display" option in the machine simulation screen analyzes models and displays edges without affecting simulation speed, the company says. During simulation, users can specify "stop at" events such as collisions, warnings and tool changes and manage these events in the NC program dialog. Enhanced collision algorithms are said to provide faster collision checks. Additional updates include constant gougecheck simulation, automatic saving for Vericut Reviewer files, new CAD/CAM inter faces for Surfcam and SolidWorks, improved SpacePilot Editor StEPHANiE MoNSANt Y, smonsant y@mmsonline.com 198 MMS September 2013 mmsonline.com
