Its customers demand on-time delivery to meet tight schedules, and several require a quality rating of 97 percent or better. In 2011, Sarro encountered a problem when manufacturing large plates, many of which mea- sured 20 by 20 inches and 28 by 21 inches with t h i c k n e s s e s r a n g i n g from 1 / 8 to 1 / 2 inch. "The biggest issue was not being able to reach all t h e w a y a r o u n d o u r large plates in order to machine them in a single s e t u p ," s a y s B r a d d Sarro, director of oper- ations, and Bruce's son. "We could only reach so far on the Y axis, so we had to manually flip the part around to com- plete the job." A l o n g w i t h t h e i r c a p a c i t y l i m i t a t i o n s, Sarro recognized that its smaller machining centers were not keep- ing up with newer, more r o b u s t t e c h n o l o g y available to them. For i n s t a n c e , t h e o l d e r machining centers had s lowe r s pindl e s, a nd coolant-through capabil- ity was not very power- ful. Also, workholding capability was limited.
