BETTER PRODUCTION Shops Using Technology 98 MMS August 2017 mmsonline.com on HEC's latest Mazak five-axis CNC machining center, which features a 160-inch-long dual- shuttle table. Its toolchanger is designed to run a full table of parts while the other is being loaded to eliminate downtime. The Ma zak machines used to make a loud noise when changing tools, he says, but now the machines are much quieter when roughing titanium and stainless steel. The high-torque retention knobs also eliminated fret- ting of the toolholder shank, he says. Ultimate l y, the progre s si ve c onve r sion to JMPP's high-torque retention knobs has allowed HEC to overcome long-standing productivit y issues for its entire fleet of high-speed CNC mills. For its demanding aero- space part production, t h e r e t e n t i o n k n o b s have shown lower spin- d l e l o a d s , t h e s h o p says. Additionally, HEC reports reduced power consumption in rough- ing titanium and stain- less steel, and improved overall tool life. Over the long haul, HEC says it h a s b e e n a b l e t o incre ase spe eds and feeds and deliver better cycle times to realize substantial savings. "I would like to put a word out to the people w h o a r e n o t q u i t e c o n v i n c e d y e t: T h e y (the high-torque reten- tion knobs) are wor th the small investment," Mr. Sampson advises.
