Sending a redesigned model with screenshots highlighting altered features and descriptions of the changes can significantly increase the probability that the customer will adopt the suggested changes. • Understand a design engineer's situation. Oftentimes it will cost more to process an engi- neering change order (ECO) than the change would save in manufacturing cost. Judge poten- tial savings and how painful it might be for the engineer to make those changes, keeping in mind the effort he/she has already put into the project. • Take the time to explain how and why the DFM suggestions will help the engineer person- ally and professionally. Mr. Teixeira says this last point is particularly important. Parametric USA often creates sum- mary infographics for its customers' engineers t h a t s h o w h o w t h e i r ef for ts in streamlining par t designs via DFM have saved their com- panies time and money on recent projects, and e n c o u r a g e s t h e m to share this information w i th th e i r m a n ag e r s. This gives the engineers personal wins in their workplaces by clearly d e m o n s t r a t i n g t h e i r added value while pro- viding leverage in nego- tiating higher wage s, earning more respect within their companies and so on. In turn, Para- metric USA has found that those engineers are more likely to approach the shop early in a new- product design cycle and recommend to their companies that they use its machining and DFM ser vices. "For us, this often means parts are easier to machine, they require less tooling and labor, and they can be produced faster using h i g h e r m a c h i n i n g speeds and feeds. Plus, they can be delivered and invoiced sooner," Mr. Teixeira says. When the coolant becomes a Liquid Tool. Metalworking fluids to optimize productivity, economic efficiency and machining quality.
