TOOLING AND WORKHOLDING MMS FEBRUARY 2018 112 mmsonline.com Routers Optimize Milling, Slotting of Abrasive Composites The CoroMill Plura routers from Sandvik Coromant are designed to optimize milling and slotting operations in composite materials such as carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) and glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP). The routers have been built to address the issues caused by the abrasiveness of composite materials, including rapid tool wear, compromised cutting quality, elevated temperatures, vibration and unstable cutting conditions. The routers are well suited for three-, four- and five-axis machining centers, gantry-type CNC machines and stand-alone robotic arm systems in industries where these materials are prevalent, includ- ing aerospace, automotive, motorsport, wind power and marine. The routers can be used with or without coolant in full radial engagement and at full depth of cut when milling and slotting composites. They can also be used for finishing passes in some cases. Helix angles designed for sharpness and cutting edge strength ensure longer tool life and high-quality surface, edge and slot finishes. The line includes compression, low helix and serrated routers. The compression router, with its dual 40-degree helix, is good for special woven glass layers on both sides of CFRP components. Because the compressed flutes over- lap, it reduces vibration in thin, flat materials. Specifically designed for smooth, burr-free finish- ing passes, the low-helix (5-degree) router features a high number of teeth and a coating that is designed for fast cutting and heat pro- tection. Right and left helix options enable flexibility in material with weak or com- promised fixturing. The serrated router, with its large flute form, is designed for high material removal rates. The dual cutting action reduces delamination and vibration, providing a single-pass solution to minimize stress on composite parts. | Sandvik Coromant Inc. 201-794-5000 sandvik.coromant.com Advantage Tungsten Carbide ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE WHY SHOULD THE LEADER IN TUNGSTEN CARBIDE POWDERS MAKE YOUR TOOLING? As a production engineer, you're always trying to achieve optimum efficiency in your production runs. By trading upfront savings for extended wear life, you're actually reducing your tooling costs over the long term. Applications Engineering At General Carbide, our applications engineers can help you find the ideal solution, and determine how it will perform based on your specifications, including: • Production Volume • Operation (Stamping, Forming, Blanking) • Material Thickness • Temperature • Press Type (Pressure, Tonnage, Impact) • Production Run Duration Advanced Metallurgy for Exceptional Grades Through extensive R&D;, General Carbide can adjust hardness, toughness, corrosion resistance, wear and galling properties, high temperature performance and other characteristics to meet the most stringent requirements. Ideal Applications for Tungsten Carbide Tungsten Carbide tooling out- performs tool steels in manufacturing: • Brake Pads & Components • Catalytic Converters • Clutch Liner Materials • Deep Draw Products (Oil Filters, Pans) • Electronic Connectors • Electronic Motor Components • Forming & Swaging Dies • Hardened Spark Plugs • Non-Ferrous Components • Transmission Components Justifying the Cost of Tungsten Carbide Tooling Although Tungsten Carbide tooling costs more than tool steels, it has 10x-100x more tool life than steel. In fact, Tungsten Carbide's higher upfront costs are more than offset by extended production runs and reduced downtime. ISO 9001:2008 C E R T I F I E D
