MMS DECEMBER 2018 98 JEDD COLE | EDITOR | Systems and Software Software Update Enhances Capabilities of Rotary-Axis Calibrators Renishaw's Carto 3.0 software for its XR20-W rotary axis calibrator enables users to quickly capture and analyze machine performance data from rotary axes. With the software, the company's XM-60 multi-axis calibrator can now be used with the XR20-W rotary- axis calibrator. Combining both machines' capabilities, the software is said to reduce the cali- bration of a five-axis machine tool from several days to within half a day. It enables analysis of multiple error types over differ- ent time frames, building up a comprehen- sive overview of a machine's performance, and automatically stores complete datasets for each machine tool within a single data- base. By independently comparing the dif- ferent errors associated with each axis over different time frames, users can better plan preventive maintenance schedules. With the software suite, data is more visible, usable and actionable, making it the ideal platform for supporting "smart factories" incorporat- ing Industry 4.0 strategies. | Renishaw Inc. | 847-286-9953 Lathe CNC Adds Features for Safety, Usability Heidenhain has released upgrades to the CNC Pilot 640 lathe control. Most notably, a Turn Plus feature is now standard on new purchases, enabling the creation of a lathe program with the push of a button with up to 90-percent time savings, according to the company. The control software also includes improvements such as added Functional Safety (FS) features and expansions that are said to pro- vide the machine operator and the machine tool builder with more benefits. The contouring control is designed for turning complex parts, as it combines simple operation with reliable, high-quality series production. It enables five-axis
