52 MMS January 2017 SHOP TALK NIMS SELECTED BY U.S. DEPARTMENT OF LABOR TO EXPAND REGISTERED APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMS The National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS; Fairfax, Virginia), the manufacturing indus- try's developer of skills standards and credentials, has been selected by the United States Depart- ment of Labor as an industr y intermediar y to support the expansion of registered apprentice- ships within manufactur- ing. NIMS will work with industry, workforce and education par tners to i n c r e a s e a c c e s s t o a p p r e n ti c e s h i p s a n d a s s i s t e m p l o y e r s i n d eve l o p i n g n ew p ro - grams that reach diverse talent pools. As part of this initiative, $500,000 is available to support companies in establish- ing a registered appren- ticeship program with the Department of Labor.
