Unfortunately, it was unable to thread the parts in their hardened state, despite tr ying various carbide, cubic boron nitride (CBN) and other t y p e s of to o ling. T h e s h o p d i d c o n s i d e r threading the par ts in their soft state and then chasing the threads after th ey we re h a rd e n e d. However, it found this to b e a n u nwo r k a b l e s o l u t i o n b e c a u s e i t required multiple oper- a t i o n s, a n d t h e l o n g machining cycles and short tool lives extended production time. When the shop con- t a c t e d S e c o to o l i n g specialists Don Halas and Aaron Eller for help, both immediately ruled o u t a c a r b i d e t o o l , b e c a u s e s u c h a to o l would wear out before completing the entire thread form.
