mmsonline.com October 2017 MMS 153 GEAR EXPO 2017 October 24 - 26 company's Leste CNC, which is designed for handling as many as 12 axes. The company's worm screw power skiving (WSPS) technology is also available. This technol- ogy inverts the worm hobbing process so that the workpiece turns faster than the cutter. It is designed for small worms with modules as high as 17 diametric pitch. The company says it is four times faster than traditional worm hobbing. SOFTWARE SIMULATES SPIRAL BEVEL GEAR MACHINING, CYLINDRICAL HOBBING THIRD WAVE SYSTEMS INC., BOOTH 538 Third Wave Systems will showcase two versions of its AdvantEdge gear machining software for simulating spiral bevel gear (SBG) machining and cylindrical hobbing processes. For SBG machining, the software can simulate single and c o nti n u o u s p ro c e s s e s w i th g e n e r ati n g a n d non-generating motions. This builds upon the current capability to simulate cylindrical hobbing, in which users design, generate and truncate the in-cut cylindrical gear geometry, enabling simula- tion at the location of interest. This feature is said to increase tool life and cutting gear quality by simulating the cutting process to predict chip formation, temperature, stresses and cutting forces. The software can also reduce the number of design iterations and amount of testing required. Both cylindrical and SBG machining can be studied through proce ss-spe cif ic inter face s designed for cylindrical hobbing, face hobbing and face milling, into which users enter workpiece blank dimensions and process parameters. The latest version includes additional functionality for entering process kinematics, advancements in initial meshing to generate in-cut mesh, a robust engine for large problem sizes and postprocess- ing capabilities.
