Friday of every October (this year's edition was
October 6). From the outset, the intent has been
for shops to open their doors to the public in order
to lay outdated misconceptions to rest and expose
the true reality of what it's like to make things for
a living.
Figures from the of ficial website show that
busine s s owne rs have got te n the me s sage.
However, the best showcase of Manufacturing
Day's impact and the ef for t behind it can be
found not in statistic s, but in the re al-wor ld
experiences of the shops and students that this
Ray Shapland, project engineer-
ing manager, talks about CNC
programming with a group of
students from Lou Vue's class at
Valley High School, Santa Ana.
This year alone, the shop has
spent more than $1.5 million on
new technology. This includes new
injection molding machines and a
new crane in the technical center,
where molds are sampled; a new
laser engraver; and pallet-chang-
ing automation for the shop's EDM
and five-axis machining center.
