112 MMS December 2017 TOOLING AND WORKHOLDING Kitagawa NorthTech introduces its AS series of grinding steady rests, featuring narrow, retractable arms for easy automated part loading. The arms prevent inter ference with oil hole journals and provide easy vertical loading of the workpiece. Available in standard gripping diameters from 0.39" to 5.59" (10 to 142 mm), the rests can accommodate eccentric throw with body modi- fications for crank lobe clearance. Coated with abrasive-resistant nickel, the adapters can be used with all Carmex standard thread-turning inserts in 16-, 22- and 27-mm sizes. The 16-mm grooving inserts fit the MLR-L 16-32 and MLR-L 16-40 adapters. The inser ts can reduce inventor y, thereby saving appreciable costs. The boring bars and adapters can be used with internal high-pressure and conventional coolant. The smallest steady rest features a gripping range from 6 to 70 mm, and the largest model features a 450- to 870-mm gripping range. Special sizes are also available. They enable the turning of long-shafts, slim and heavy workpieces and center workpieces. They are also designed to provide support at several positions and reduce chatter and vibration. The housing is made of cast iron and all moving The steady rests are suitable for all crankshaft, camshaft and cylindrical grinding applications that require vertical loading, offering three-point adjustable centering capability for accuracy. Other features include modular regrindable carbide or relappable PCD work rest pads, and provisions to accommodate attenuating in-process gaging. They are also suitable for pass-through grinding capabilities. Steady rests are available with hydrau- lic or pneumatic actuation and automatic lubrica- tion systems to maximize roller and cam arm life.
