TOOLING AND WORKHOLDING MMS JULY 2018 120 mmsonline.com More Flutes Give Thread Mill Greater Performance Constructed of MT8 carbide with Carmex's Blu coating, the FMT thread mill is designed to deliver accurate thread geometry and surface quality in shorter cycle times. Unlike conventional taps, the thread mill can thread down to the bottom of a blind hole while delivering the reliability nec- essary for complex parts. An increased number of flutes, which require a heavy-duty carbide grade and coating technology to ensure high performance and long tool life, provide high-speed performance. In a recent test, the company says an FMT thread mill with a six-fluted cutter and internal coolant created a 10-mm internal right-hand thread to the bottom of a blind hole in SAE 4340 steel. The cycle time was 1.5 sec. and the tool lasted for 2,170 threads. | Carmex Precision Tools LLC | 262-628-5030 carmexusa.com Tap Holder Provides Tension, Compression Options TM Smith Tool's LCTH gen- eral-purpose compensating tap holder accommodates a broad range of tapping applications. The holder has tension and/or compres- sion for non-synchronous machines and radial float to compensate for misalign- ment between the workpiece and spindle. The tap holder is available with a straight shank manufactured from premium-grade steel, capable of withstanding harsh envi- ronments and rigorous use. Available in two series, the tap holders feature a quick- change design for conve- nience and speed. There are five tension and compression combinations available, including full tension for accurate thread depth. The tap holders can also be used in an end mill holder, collet chuck or lathe tool block. The holder is built to accept a range of tap adapters. | T.M.
